Golf

PGA's premier Mexico course onsite at Mayakoba

A game of tradition. A place of honor. From the very first tee, it will become quite clear that an incredible round of golf is before you. A cenote (underground cave) splits the paspalum turf on the first fairway. From there, the course gracefully bends and twists through three distinct landscapes. Mangrove jungles. Limestone channels. And of course, stunning stretches along the blue Caribbean Sea. In "El Camaleón," Greg Norman has created a 7,000-yard championship golf course unique not only to Mexico, but the entire world of golf. El Camaleón has already attracted the attention of the world's best golfers. The PGA's Mayakoba Golf Classic, a regularly scheduled event on the PGA Tour and the first of its kind to be held in Mexico, is scheduled for February 18-24, 2008. The event is an incredible testament to the imaginative design and breathtaking beauty of El Camaleón.

Environment

Viceroy Mayakoba, Riviera Maya is not only one of the largest and most ambitious projects to take place on the Riviera Maya, it also serves as an eco-benchmark for which all future undertakings will be judged. Unlike most new real estate developments, we haven’t come in and simply cleared land to make room for ourselves. Instead, we’ve made it our utmost priority to study the environment and integrate our resort with as little disruption as possible.

To successfully complete such a forward-thinking project, we made it a point to look back about 4,000 years. That entailed a thorough analysis and understanding of an ancient Mayan technique called “socoleo,” which is a method for managing forests and maintaining natural balance. Using those lessons, biologists and developers came up with the blueprint for creating our resort. From the jungles and mangroves to the dunes and coral reefs to the hundreds of thousands of plants and wildlife, we’re proud to present a thriving example of how luxury and nature can live in perfect harmony.

To create such a forward-thinking resort, we began by taking a look back. Rich in history and steeped in tradition, the Riviera Maya region is one of the most time-honored destinations on earth.

A thousand years before Columbus discovered the New World, an advanced Mayan civilization was in full flower, with complex city-states, harmonious architecture and ambitious temples strewn across the Yucatán Peninsula. Many of the most notable Mayan sites are an easy day trip from Viceroy Riviera Maya. Among them are Coba, perhaps the largest of the Mayan cities, Chichen Itzá, famous for the 91-step pyramid, and Tulúm, a walled Mayan port city perched above scenic beaches.
